Tips, Tricks and Tools To Help You Sing!

What’s the difference between classical voice lessons and contemporary?

I’m doing voice (singing) lessons at school and have to choose 1 to do. What’s the difference and what sort of musicals/operas can I get involved into when I’ve learned it all?
Also, do these lessons change the voice type you end up with?
(I’m aiming for tenor or countertenor)

If you’re going to do countertenor I can’t recommend classical strongly enough. If your teacher is any good the classical lessons will be aimed at preserving your voice for the longest time possible so that you have the longest career. I’ve known belters who were washed up in 7 years.

As for the musicals/operas, countertenors are usually natural baritones and there’s a role in every single opera I can think of.

Classical lessons do not change the type of voice you have. They only make your voice last longer because you’re using your sound-producing mechanism more efficiently.
