Tips, Tricks and Tools To Help You Sing!

What song to choose (auditioning to college, I'm female, my voice is probably mezzo)?

In high school, I was one of the best altos of the chamber choir. Unfortunately, it's been a year since I've really been in any choral groups and I have no instructors to ask for advice from. I need to sing two songs/arias (one in a foreign language).

Looking around online, I noticed that a popular choice is Voi Che Sapete. I've looked at the sheet music, and listened to recordings online… I can do it, but it's a little bit high for me right now.

I don't know my exact range, but it's somewhere between medium-high tenor and low soprano. I've never had a voice lesson with a real person, so it's never occurred to me to check.

Help? I don't really know what's appropriate.
*blink*

Yeah, I know tenor is male voice. Just. The "alto" part doesn't usually go as low as my voice, so I figured that "medium-high tenor" was a better way to say it.

I cannot stress ENOUGH how much you need a private teacher. Fist of all, you are mixing male and female terms for the classification of voice parts – soprano and alto are female, and tenor is MALE. This is a COLLEGE AUDITION, and where – and IF – you are accepted will make or break your future plans. I can only assume that this is for NEXT year, since most colleges have already made their decisions for this year. So, you have about 6 months to really get it in gear, find a FINE teacher, and get yourself in shape for auditions. I hope that you do well – because without this, no matter WHAT people tell you here – you are not going to be accepted into ANY decent college without fine instruction NOW. Oh, SOME place will take you – because they want your money – but they will not be reputable. Heck, there is a college near here that used to take music students with NO audition!!!! HORRIBLE!!!!! Since I was on the committee for hiring new music teachers here, I could tell you STORIES about just HOW horrible their graduates were – but that does not help YOU any. GET A TEACHER!! If you say that you cannot afford a teacher – then you cannot afford COLLEGE, and you will not get in anyway. Sorry – but that is truth, and I should know.

Yes, I know HUNDREDS of arias and art songs that would be good – but I cannot recommend them, since I do not know YOU and YOUR VOICE – and what other technique it needs.
