I finish school at the end of this year and am taking a year off before university. What im looking for is a course in any country that covers vocal training, dance and music and obviously with some form of accomodation. Something thats intensive but not too long. What organisations do you know of, please point me in the right direction..
…It would be nice if your reccomendations were experience based.. ",
To answer your question adequately, I would need to know which area of music or the performing arts, i.e., voice, dance, another instrument, acting, music theatre, music therapy, pedagogy, music education, music management, theory and composition, etc., that is the most interesting to you, as every school has a different specialty. Since at the beginning of your studies, your main courses are general education courses (math, english, social and natural sciences, etc.), it's cheaper, and indeed easier, to attend a community college near your home for the first to years–just long enough to get the requirements out of the way. Most community colleges nowadays have a small music, theatre, or dance program, but most likely you will have to audition for any of these programs. If you are willing to audition and do make it in, you can always consult with your primary performing arts instructor who will be able to steer you in the right direction according to your abilities and interests.
Personally, I attended a community college for my first 2 years to get my general education requirements out of the way, then I transferred to Florida State, which was rated 3rd in the nation for piano (my primary instrument, voice being my second). After I finished my Bachelors degree, I auditioned at Juilliard, but transferred my second term to its sister school, The Boston Conservatory, to finish my Masters. I continued my studies at the PhD level at the Univ. of North Texas, rated #1 in Jazz studies and composition, to focus on my musicology degree.
Ultimately, it appears that you do not want to spend 12 years in higher education like I did, but whatever road you take, remember to remain flexible, and don't ever let anyone tell you what you're worth. Only you can decide that.
Best wishes on your educational endeavors! Go get 'em!
