when I sing normally: I go up a scale, hit a break in my range where I skip a couple of notes around the middle f sharp, and go straight into falsetto.
why does this break occur, and does this have to do with a mixed voice or are they completely separate?
The place in your range you’re talking about is called your register break. There are ways to sing through it that will make it less obvious, but everyone has that place somewhere in their vocal register. For a woman it could be somewhere around a G or A (above middle C), for one who is a belter a bit higher — a B or maybe even C. For most guys it’s obviously lower. The way I got the smoother transition was simply singing around the range of that break and finding ways to soften the note right before the break and make the note above it a bit stronger. Practice, practice, over and over and eventually it will somewhat smooth out.
My understanding of Mixed Voice is one of two things. It’s either mixed in the studio or part of a group of different vocalists — some combination of bass, tenor, alto or soprano, hence the term mixed voices or mixed chorus.
Hope some of this is helpful to you!
GOOD LUCK!
