it's really low & dull sounding.

Practice, practice, practice. You don't need a coach, but you do need to be sensitive to the strain on your vocal chords – be nice to them and they will be nice to you. If you have to work them too hard, you are straining them.
Listen to news casters, listen to prime time actors, listen to people with interesting voices. Copy that. The key is modulation – modulating tone (up and down) and volume (up and down). Modulating pace (fast and slow) if good too for effect as is soft (vowel emphasis) and hard (consonant emphasis). Practice 'touching' people with your voice – caressing, slapping, etc.
Basically, listen and pay attention, then copy what is interesting, and practice, practice, practice. Just don't hurt your voice.
