well try to listen to a lot of songs and then setting yourself somewhere in the middle… put your own style and edge on it…

i use to have the same problem however found that you have to take a little time and get used to singing by yourself find your own voice if you copy people thats as far as you will go until you force yourself to branch off

It is a good thing to be able to change your tone or mood of the song. It is just like poetry, but you need your own style. Your own voice is usually better and far more comfortable. Your range must be amazing. Choir is probably the best thing you will get and it is usually free. In this economy don’t waste your money going somewhere else.

Don’t imitate other singers. If you’re good, you can sing well as "yourself". Try singing Mariah songs with your voice instead of hers and see what happens.
