5 Proven, Surefire Ways To Sing Vocal Harmony

Learning to sing vocal harmony will take time and effort, but with these five tips you can be well on your way to excellence in singing backup.

1. Get Basic Knowledge of Chord structure
What exactly is vocal harmony? All basic chords are built on three notes played together. If you take a root or tonic chord, the first chord in any given scale, it is built on the first, third, and fifth notes in that scale. If you consider four part vocal harmony, you could add the seventh note of the scale for even more variety. There is also the fourth and sixth note to consider.

Singing vocal harmonies requires ear training and a basic knowledge of how chords are structured. Some seem to have a natural ability, but it is really just a matter of being able to separate different vocal phrases that are sung together. When you pay attention to the notes that ride above or below the melody, usually in intervals of thirds and fifths, you are listening to the harmonies. Consider taking a class on the theory of music.

2. Learn Basic Piano
If you have access to a piano or can sight-read music, it becomes easier to identify the notes on the keyboard and then build harmonies to match. If you can plunk out the melody of a song, you can eventually learn to hear and sing a third, fourth or fifth interval above or below the main melody, it is a good place to start. The piano will help you all of your life with the visualization of music theory, so enjoy it.

3. Learn to listen to the other voices
How do you develop an ear for vocal harmony? Listen, experiment, and learn. One of the best ways to study harmonies is to listen to popular music that use vocals and try to pick out the other vocal lines being sung around the melody. The choruses of songs often add vocal harmonies to broaden the sound.

You will be able to hear when you are singing in tune with a harmonized phrase, it will sound pleasing to your ears. Most singers have learned basic music theory, so they may be able to do this naturally.

4. Find a partner to sing vocal harmony with.
It does help if you have at least one other person to sing vocal harmony with, so that you can play off each others voices, or switch off between the melody and a harmony that you practice together.

It is worth noting that certain voices blend better than others do, and that it is important to be comfortable in the range you intend to sing for a harmony part. If some of the notes required in your vocal harmony are beyond you, you can either transpose the music to a different key, or make alterations to the places you have difficulty.

The more you sing harmony, the more you instill good pitch and your ability to pick up the different lines being sung improves. There are few other requirements for learning to sing vocal harmony, as they say, practice makes perfect.

As you become more familiar with what sounds good, you will develop a vocal harmony line that flows naturally within your vocal range. If you are in a vocal group, you can always ask your group leader or a private vocal coach to emphasize vocal harmony in your training, until it becomes second nature to you.

5. Join a singing group
If you enjoy singing vocal harmony, you can find other singers to join in an acapella group, chorus, barbershop quartet, or similar group of voices to experiment with and develop your harmonizing skills. All colleges have community choirs and it is really fun too. Do not worry about being inexperienced, most people are like you too, they just love to sing. Bluegrass, spiritual, folk, and country music are all good choices for creating beautiful harmonies that you can practice either alone or together with your musical friends.

A Few Simple Vocal Exercises For Improving Your Singing

Exercising your throat regularly is important for improving your voice regardless of where you want to use your skills in a kara oke bar, church choir or on stage. It is not true that only beginners need singing lessons accomplished singers and natural singers need them as well. The following vocal exercises will help you to hone your skills.

Always start with warm up exercises to condition the throat for more strenuous activity. Both voice related and breathing exercises should form a part of your warm-up session. To begin with take a deep breath. This can be done by inhaling deeply and holding your breath to the count of four and then exhale, once again hold to the count of four before breathing in again. Another exercise involves inhaling normally but when you exhale do it on the sound of ‘sshh’, like you are asking a kid to keep quiet. Use your entire breath to make the sound and once you have let out all the air relax and breathe normally. Do this exercise 5 times.

The breathing exercises should be followed by vocal exercises that will condition the throat muscles and vocal chords. Start with the first exercise called motorboat where you will make a sound like a motorboat. Make the sound by putting your lips together and exhale to make the sound by flapping your lips. This exercise is used to loosen the vocal chord and condition the throat muscles. After you have done the exercise for some time try to vary the notes while making the sound.

In the second exercise start b singing the notes of the mid range octave and once you are comfortable sing the notes in the ascending and descending order. Use a vowel sound like ‘aah’ and start singing from the lower notes going higher and then coming down again.

To conclude do some cool down exercises. It is important that you always remember to finish with the cool down exercises. After you exercise your throat the blood flow to the larynx increases. The blood accumulated in the larynx will stay there if you don’t do the vocal cool down exercises causing swelling in the vocal chord. If you try to speak in this condition there are string chances that you may damage the vocal chord. This makes vocal cool down exercises crucial and a good exercise is gently humming at a lazy pace.

5 Tips to Help you Learn to Sing

This article will give you helpful tips to help you learn to sing. These tips will teach you more about the proper way to sing and will help you get the most out of your voice! To learn more Click Here

#1 To learn to sing the correct way, you need to learn diaphragmatic breathing. Diaphragmatic breathing is the foundation of singing. When you breathe, your shoulders shouldn’t rise and should stay relaxed. Fill the lower portion of your lungs with air and pretend you have a big balloon tied around your waist that you are filling. This kind of breathing will give your singing much more power than clavicular breathing, which is the incorrect way to breathe.
#2 Before people learn to sing, they sometimes don’t realize how essential it is to warm up your voice before you perform. Just as athletes warm-up before athletic activities to prevent injuries, singers should warm-up as well to prevent vocal injuries. When you warm-up, you should begin gently and sing in both your high and low ranges.

#3 Don’t yell, smoke, drink ice-cold water or alcohol. These things are not good for your voice.

#4 Don’t sing an entire song with the same volume and speed all the way through. Dynamics will make your song much more interesting. Before you perform, decide what parts of the song you want to sing quieter and what parts you want to sing louder and where you want to crescendo and decrescendo. You should also decide if you want to change tempos or ritardando at a certain place in the song.

#5 If you want to learn to sing, you need to know that good stage presence is important! Even if you have a great technique and great voice, you need to be able to asella the song you sing. Use facial expressions. You should also come across as confident, even if you don’t feel it. Remember most performers get nervous: the trick is to apretenda to be confident and learn how to work through your nerves. If you make a mistake, pretend it didn’t happen and keep going. It’s not a big deal. Most likely the audience didn’t know you made a mistake anyway! Click Here

Studio Session Singers – Jingle Reels That Sell!

Those wishing to break into the music industry and specifically into jingle and session singing, are many in number. Why is it that some with little gift and ability make it, and not only make it but develop an impressive clientele for show, and still others with incredible singing style and motivation never even getting the slightest inkling of approval from music insiders? Those are great questions, and while I will attempt to provide you with insight as to how to not only get noticed, but to break into commercial session singing, I will admit that there are not always answers to some of these million dollar questions. I would be lying if I told you otherwise. As a former talent booking agent with the William Morris Agency and as a professional singer singing on numerous commercials and backup vocals for many artists, there are times when you scratch your head and say, “I don’t have the slightest clue.” But let’s take a look at some key ideas and concepts to get you to your goal of breaking into session singing.

You’ve developed your voice and have been told umpteen times through the years that you should be singing commercials. You’ve always smiled, said thank you and have dismissed the idea because certainly you could never break into singing commercials – Or can you? Now the idea is haunting you to the point of if you could just figure out the whole singing deal, what it takes and how much money you would have to spend and if reasonable, you might just give it a try. There are many singers in this stage. I must admit that I talk to multiple individuals each week who want to be a session singer or singing commercials and the only thing that is truly holding them back is the vision. It’s not so much money, but the drive and ambition to say, “I’m going to do this thing.” Your first hurdle to jump is the idea that you can and should be singing commercials.

Your next item on your to do list is your jingle reel. We just mentioned that most individuals do not grab hold of their dream to sing commercials because of a lack of drive and ambition. But do you know what really camouflages the drive and ambition – money. I know people with limited money and income who are willing to spend $7 – $10 on appetizers a couple of times a week and who knows how much on alcohol, but yet they don’t have the money to invest in their singing career. At ReelMusician.com we have always tried to not only further singers and their careers, but the ability to offer affordable jingle singing demos. Our demos start at (3) jingles $290, (5) $380 and (7) jingles $495. Now you do the math – Divide the number of jingles that are written specifically for that singer and that’s pretty darn affordable. We don’t get rich writing jingles for singers trying to break into the market. Think of all of the money that is wasted week in and week out, yet individuals choose to stay in their mundane and unchallenging jobs because, “they don’t have the money.” You heard me right – Individuals choose to stay right where they are and so we can’t, nor should we invest time in those individuals.

But there are individuals with the dream and are willing to invest a reasonable amount of time, money and energy. Those singers we love to try to help, even if they don’t purchase a thing from us. We really like to see people succeed. So what should your demo consist of? You will want to include as many jingles on your reel that you can afford. Obviously, the more jingles you have, the more styles and versatility that you can demonstrate hopefully opening up more session and singing doors. From the date of this writing, I don’t know of many other companies, and I can’t even honestly jot down one that writes jingles specifically for session and jingle singers. Now we do at ReelMusician.com and I’m sure there are others out there. I’m not talking about jingle companies who write commercials for other companies, but music houses that write specifically for the singer and their demos. You should plan on investing $500 – $1,000 to get a quality demo done, and I’m sure you can spend a whole lot more than that. But I know that’s reasonable, because we’re in that range of pricing at ReelMusician.com.

Once you have your incredible jingle reel in hand, not the, “We recorded this at my friend’s house” demo, but the jingle reel that says “Wow! Your jingle reel that you are sending out has got to grab the attention of the jingle houses. Unfortunately, there are many individuals out there who try to take the “My friend’s recording studio,” approach and fail to miss the what is needed musically on their reel. Listening to the radio and TV and emulating those commercials will most likely not get it. Jingles that go on a singer’s jingle reel, when they are first starting out, are sometimes completely different – Why? Because you have got to grab the attention of the jingle producers and industrial music houses. This is sometimes in juxtaposition as to current jingles airing on radio and TV.

Once you have your incredible jingle reel in hand you will be getting together with other jingle singers in your area that you are not in direct competition with vocally and jotting down names and number of producers and writers in your area. You will also submit your reel to jingle houses in your area along with industrial music houses and recording facilities in general. Make sure that you have a system in place for tracking your calls and contact numbers. Your demo cover should be readable, with colors that attention grabbing and with your name contact info and year and season of reel.

Many singers get into the business just as I have described, by following up with other session singers in their area and are very successful. The most important aspect to your singing dream is obviously your reel. Make sure it shines and commands the “Wow” factor. Feel free to contact us with contact info below.

5 Secrets of a Good Voice Teacher

With the availability of information on the internet increasing each year, it has become the number one resource for answers. Many are even turning to the web for voice teachers and online lessons. Consider this, just as you would never teach someone to drive a car online or via skype, it isn’t the best way learn to sing either. Great singers rely on a real, live voice teacher for vocal development. Here are the top five characteristics of a good teacher.

A good teacher sees your weaknesses and works to eradicate them

Encouragement is very important, but if your teacher only focuses on what you already do well, your growth as a singer will be stunted. Look for a teacher who clearly and respectfully exposes your weaknesses while providing practical ways for you to work on them.

A good teacher helps you to develop a language for what to do, so that in performing situations you know how to stay on track.

Singing is a natural ability, so often, you will not be able to put into words how you do what you do. A good teacher will help you close that loop. Personal language is very important to develop since it is unlikely that your teacher will be by your side during every performance. Knowing how to correct and encourage yourself before and during performance is a trait of all world-class singers.

A good teacher uses techniques that encourage more and more vocal freedom the longer you study.

Consistent study should make you more confident in your vocal abilities and less dependent upon your teacher. The ultimate goal of study is to develop the connection between mind and body as such a high level that you are able to navigate any vocal terrain you encounter. In advanced study, your teacher should offer minimal correction instead, he or she should suggest ways to expand the boundaries of the voice.

A good teacher nurtures your strengths.

If you begin vocal study with fantastic high notes, phenomenal breath control or a beautiful vibrato, these qualities should not diminish due to vocal study. Everything that is already good about your voice should only get better and easier under the guidance of a good voice teacher. You should never leave a voice lesson hoarse, in pain or with an otherwise strained voice.

A good teacher communicates clearly and effectively.

A good teacher will explain things in various ways until you “get it.” Some singers learn best by doing, others by watching first then repeating. Still other singers must hear or have a detailed explanation before grasping a concept.
C’mon Sing With Me! Easy Ways to Make Money Online Today! Really?

If you ask Nancy Grace whether there’s chaos in the world she would likely smile at you. The reason why? Her entertainment news hour is about chaos in the real world, so a character similar to her might ask you where you’re living!

If you ask someone who has earned $1,000’s of dollars online in a day, in a week or every single year – if there are indeed easy ways to make money online – depending your experiences you’ll exit the website if you’ve worked hard all your life and haven’t experience some of the golden realities the internet has to offer. So a mature online businessman could say, don’t buy from me, just wait a little and read what I’ve to say and see for yourself.

Personally, I can tell you that – yes – you certainly can earn yourself easy money online today. A simple, non-defensive way to start the hunt for answers is what I personally did exactly 5 productive years ago. I asked myself, how in this world can I make easy, smart money without having to audition for business?
Results? I got answers. Lots of answers!

Among some of the ways to earn dependable, easy, smart and unconventional money and eliminating the word “hard work” (as you basically seat, research, execute and adjust) is internet marketing. Internet marketing opened the doors to numerous great achievements for many of us. How so?

- SEO: Also known as search engine optimization! Just start a website, optimize it for Google friendly love – and, ultimately, rank such website in the top 5 organic (free) search engine results for in-demand keywords and wham bam! Cool dudes (no matter if you’re 30 or 60) are likely to end up singing one more time “The World Is Mine” or perhaps, “La Donna e Mobile” if you’re a bit more classy.

- Joint Venture Partners: The truth is, some of them are ugly, fun, cool, there are beauty queens and there’re also soon to be bold dudes like me! But the truth? You can surely make big money without money with the help of a business friend.

- Going “Freelance” – One time definition, a job on the internet, but it can pay your bills if you know where to look. So yes, here you audition for business, but most worthy jobs offline you’ve to wait in line and hope your resume sparkles to the ones seeing it. But reality? You can earn yourself a living from it doing work-for-hire jobs. There are many ways anyone can start here without experience.

Reminding you of some additional realities! The internet, just like the offline world is full of cons and people trying to get your money. Before you buy anything online and trust the full blown promises of someone that has no proof or can show he’s really a Perez Hilton, don’t swipe that VISA.

If you want to get a brand new car, on a budget and keep reasonable, Toyota or at least 10-year warranties could be a great smart option. If you want to gain 30 pounds of pure muscle, you hit the gym and watch Ronnie Coleman. Personally I need to drop some lbs, but it’s an example.

If you want to learn how to make easy money online, you might as well learn from someone that knows how to earn easy money online that can actually show you walk-the-talk proof and you usually increase your peace of mind at the end of the day. Is this guy for real? Conventional wisdom and actions, usually average results! Genuine and authentic entertainment full of facts and value, some will love you and some will not, but you’ll end up earning more doing what you love if you execute well – it’s a promise.

Improve Singing Voice

Whether you are a beginner or an accomplished singer you can always incorporate exercises to improve singing voice in your daily practice regimen. Improving your vocal range and developing a good tone will take a lot of hard work and practice and it will certainly not be possible to achieve these goals overnight. However it is not an impossible dream either and here are a few exercises that will help you to improve singing voice dramatically.

If you want to improve the tone of your voice you should be careful about the position of your larynx. The larynx also knows as the voice box is an organ in the neck made up of cartilage, muscles and ligaments. The following experiment will help you to see the importance of the position of the larynx for the various tones created by you.

Begin by opening your mouth wide like you would for a yawn. This will usually be marked by a relaxed sensation in your throat while you exhale, make a vowel sound like ‘aaahh’ you will notice that the sound produced has a every rich tone. The position of the larynx can be felt by placing your hand on the Adam’s apple or the raised notch on your throat. You will notice that the larynx moves down when making this sound. The downward movement of the larynx increases the distance traveled by the sound before it reaches your mouth. And this is what produces the rich tome.

If you want to hear the tonal effect of a upward movement of the larynx start by producing the sound of the word’nay’ with a marked nasal tone. A good way to produce a nasal sound would be to talk like Fran Dresher from the show’the nanny’. You will have to sing just like she would. If you keep your fingers on your throat you will feel the larynx move upwards. The tone made through this movement is nasal and doesn’t sound good.

So as you can see the position of the larynx is directly responsible for the tone of your voice. A larynx in the mid position is best for the tone of your voice. This is the natural relaxed position of the larynx. But maintaining this position of the larynx will come with practice. Here are a few exercises that will help.

In order to feel the position of the larynx start by placing your hand on your neck. To move the larynx in the mid position do the exercise mentioned above.

Follow this with the normal breathing exercises again making sure that the larynx is still centered.

Even when you are singing the scales maintaining this central position is essential. To begin with sing the scales normally. But keep your fingers on your neck so that you can notice any upward movement in the larynx; correct it by opening your mouth wider and relaxing the throat muscles which will push the larynx down. Sing the other scales while being aware of the position of your larynx.

Don’t just stop at the scales, you should control the movement of your larynx even while singing the words. Sing a verse from your favorite song in a baby voice noticing the upward movement of the larynx. Also try singing with your mouth open, and observe how the downward movement of the larynx produces a rich ton

Singing is one of the most enjoyable art forms albeit one that will need hard work and perseverance to learn.

Singing Can Make You Younger

Do you like singing? Perhaps you feel good in the regular time to sing some of the local nature of popular songs. Well, it might surprise you to know that you’re not just having fun, you’re also helping yourself to keep fit, youthful and healthy.

Healthy Lungs

Singing can have a dramatic impact on your lungs and breathing. The physical effort required to sing can improve lung capacity. Singers learn to use deep breathing and build up strong muscles in the torso and abdomen. The various benefits of good breathing, include better respiratory tubes and sinuses, improved mental alertness and improved posture. Good breathing can also help relaxation and sleep. The breathing techniques learned through singing can help us stay calm. The increased oxygen in the body helps in many ways.
A Good Workout

It has been said that classical singing produces the same effect as Pilates and core fitness training. The effort required to project the voice works the core muscles of the body. This intense physical effort can often result in weight loss as well. So when you sing, you are having a light aerobic workout!

Singing Keeps You Young

Another benefit of singing is that it can help keep you young. Singing gently exercises the muscles in your face, and there are many of those. Exercising the facial muscles can help reduce the onset of wrinkles. So forget all those posh and expensive anti-ageing creams. Try singing instead! A joint Harvard and Yale study found that members of the population of Newhaven, Connecticut, had increased their life expectancy through choral singing. The researchers concluded that this was because singing promoted a healthy
heart and an improved mental state.

Sing Away The Blues

We often sing when we are happy, but singing when we feel down, may be an even better idea. Singing can cause the brain to produce hormones called endorphins which rush around the body. It has the same effect as when you eat a bar of chocolate. Of course, the good news is that when you sing, you don’t gain weight. In fact, you may lose some!

So next time you head for that Karaoke night, remember you’re not just having fun, you’re doing yourself a whole lot of good too. And next time you’re feeling a bit down in the dumps, just sing!

The mystery of the human singing voice

As a practicing otolaryngologist for more than a quarter of a century, I have been exposed and overexposed tobooks, pamphlets, scientific and pseudo-scientific articles on the vocal mechanism and the technique for radicallyaltering the speaking and singing voice. Each new modification had its own coterie of devotees, teachers and students who waxenthusiastic only later tofind disappointment and often heartache in the time consuming and expensive search for the ephemeral”miracle” vocal technique. When Alan Greene first embarked on teaching the method incorporated in THE NEW VOICE the foundation technique that establihes SPEECH LEVEL SINGING he did notintend to radically depart from other previous concepts. Rather did he, with modesty, collate the knownscientific truths and with his greater understanding of the physical and emotional implications of vocalcommunication, create THE NEW VOICE. The result eradicates confusion and conflicts in teaching speech andsinging communication.

THE NEW VOICE is a most valuable contribution to laryngeal knowledge. The book presents a conciseprofile of anatomy of the larynx, the housing area for the delicate vocal cords that determine all speech andsinging. In addition, Alan Greene, with practical wisdom, presents the relationship between the psyche (mind) andthe soma (body) a” that valuable unity that is so essential to more exact speech andSPEECH LEVEL SINGING.LesterL.Coleman, M.D.Attending Surgeon Department of Otolaryngology,Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat HospitalAttending Surgeon, Department of Otolaryngology,New York Hospital, Cornell Medical CenterClinical Professor of Otolaryngology,Albert Einstein School of Medicine

The voice is truly a unique instrument. It is the only instrument:awhose quality of sound and the name of the instrument are both identified by the samewordathat must be built by its ownerawhose structure is mostly hidden in the human bodyathat contains within itself not one, but three separate mechanismsathat is constructed of muscle, cartilage and boneawhose component parts perform many different functions that are unrelated to singingathat can produce wordsathat is capable of developing either good or bad habitsawhose muscular components react to their environmentathat is directly connected to a brainathat is naturally imitative a” in the sense that, with the aid of hearing, the voice willrespond culturally in a recognizable fashionathat must not make a sound while it is learning to make soundsathat has two hornsaThe voice is the only instrument that is identified by the same word used to describe itssound. When someone is singing it is quite acceptable to say, “That vocalist has a beautiful voice.” When a violinist isplaying it would sound strange to hear someone say, “That violinist has a beautiful violin.” Voice is commonly used toidentify both the sounds produced by the act of singing and the instrument producing the sounds; violin identifies only theinstrument. The Oxford Universal Dictionary defines instrument as: “A contrivance for producing musical sounds.” According tothat definition the voice is certainly an instrument. However, the same dictionary defines voice as: “Sound, or the wholebody of sounds, made or produced by the vocal organs of man or animals; formed in or emitted from the human larynx,. . .concretely, the organs by which it is produced.” Re-read what I have italicized and you will find that just one word isused to describe the physical characteristics of the instrument a” “concretely, the organs by which it is produced” a” andthe result of the activation of the physical characteristics a” “sound.”

For our purposes we must avoid this ambiguity. The distinction between cause a” activating the vocal organs a” andeffect a” sound a” must be definitely established in the student’s mind in order to clearly understand all that is to follow. When the terms “voice” or “vocal equipment” or “vocal instrument” are used in this book they will mean the physical parts ofthe instrument. The result of the activation of the physical parts will be identified as “tone,” “sound,” “vocal quality” or “tonequality.”a The voice is the only instrument that must be built by its owner.I would like to give my personal definition of the word singer: The instrument-maker and player of the voice. Inmy opinion the definition must be broken down into these two independent elements a” instrument-maker andplayer. We cannot assume that the physical vocal instrument a” the instrument that can sing well a” already exists. If this were true, everyone would sound good naturally. Only the parts (the organs) out of which the instrumentis structured are naturally present. Everyone does not sound good naturally because not everyone is using theparts correctly. The first thing the student of the voice must learn is to structure the vocal instrument. That is whymy definition of singer begins with “the instrument-maker.” Only after the instrument is structured can you begin toplay it.We are dealing with an instrument a” the voice a” which exists quite apart from and independent of the soundsit can or cannot produce. The voice a” the physical contrivance- is the cause. The sound a” the result of activating this physical contrivance a” is the effect.a

The voice is the only instrument whose structure is mostly hidden in the human body. All musical instruments except the voice can be seen in toto. They are foreign bodies and when in use are simplyextensions of the player. Wind instruments become extensions of the player’s lips and fingers. The piano becomes anextension of the pianist’s hands, and one foota”for sustained pedalling. The only parts of the voice that can be seenon the outside are the Adam’s apple protruding from the throat, the jaw, the teeth, and part of the tongue.
Why is it important to mention this characteristic of the voice? Because an instrument that is a foreign bodydoes not involve the student’s ego during the developmental process. The student of the piano, for instance, can see, directly, his precise level of development. The voice student, on the other hand, usually relies mainly on hishearing to assess his developmenta”either he sounds better, and so feels better, or he sounds worse and feels worse. In the exercise section of this book I have tried to take the voice, as much as possible, “out” of the body and thusallow the student the opportunity to “see” the voice as if it too were a foreign body, consequently avoiding egoinvolvement.
