5 Proven, Surefire Ways To Sing Vocal Harmony

Learning to sing vocal harmony will take time and effort, but with these five tips you can be well on your way to excellence in singing backup.

1. Get Basic Knowledge of Chord structure
What exactly is vocal harmony? All basic chords are built on three notes played together. If you take a root or tonic chord, the first chord in any given scale, it is built on the first, third, and fifth notes in that scale. If you consider four part vocal harmony, you could add the seventh note of the scale for even more variety. There is also the fourth and sixth note to consider.

Singing vocal harmonies requires ear training and a basic knowledge of how chords are structured. Some seem to have a natural ability, but it is really just a matter of being able to separate different vocal phrases that are sung together. When you pay attention to the notes that ride above or below the melody, usually in intervals of thirds and fifths, you are listening to the harmonies. Consider taking a class on the theory of music.

2. Learn Basic Piano
If you have access to a piano or can sight-read music, it becomes easier to identify the notes on the keyboard and then build harmonies to match. If you can plunk out the melody of a song, you can eventually learn to hear and sing a third, fourth or fifth interval above or below the main melody, it is a good place to start. The piano will help you all of your life with the visualization of music theory, so enjoy it.

3. Learn to listen to the other voices
How do you develop an ear for vocal harmony? Listen, experiment, and learn. One of the best ways to study harmonies is to listen to popular music that use vocals and try to pick out the other vocal lines being sung around the melody. The choruses of songs often add vocal harmonies to broaden the sound.

You will be able to hear when you are singing in tune with a harmonized phrase, it will sound pleasing to your ears. Most singers have learned basic music theory, so they may be able to do this naturally.

4. Find a partner to sing vocal harmony with.
It does help if you have at least one other person to sing vocal harmony with, so that you can play off each others voices, or switch off between the melody and a harmony that you practice together.

It is worth noting that certain voices blend better than others do, and that it is important to be comfortable in the range you intend to sing for a harmony part. If some of the notes required in your vocal harmony are beyond you, you can either transpose the music to a different key, or make alterations to the places you have difficulty.

The more you sing harmony, the more you instill good pitch and your ability to pick up the different lines being sung improves. There are few other requirements for learning to sing vocal harmony, as they say, practice makes perfect.

As you become more familiar with what sounds good, you will develop a vocal harmony line that flows naturally within your vocal range. If you are in a vocal group, you can always ask your group leader or a private vocal coach to emphasize vocal harmony in your training, until it becomes second nature to you.

5. Join a singing group
If you enjoy singing vocal harmony, you can find other singers to join in an acapella group, chorus, barbershop quartet, or similar group of voices to experiment with and develop your harmonizing skills. All colleges have community choirs and it is really fun too. Do not worry about being inexperienced, most people are like you too, they just love to sing. Bluegrass, spiritual, folk, and country music are all good choices for creating beautiful harmonies that you can practice either alone or together with your musical friends.

How to Write a Song – Six Easy Steps

How to write a song… There are many people who have fragments and ideas for songs, but don’t know what to do with them. I want to show you the quick and easy steps to creating something that you can call your own. Who knows, you may have a songwriter’s brain and not even know it!

If you’re able to play a few guitar chords, or if you have some basic piano skills, you will be amazed at what you can do. Some of the world’s best songs were created using three chords. If you’ve got an imagination, the sky is the limit!

So what do you do if you’ve got a bit of a musical idea, but don’t know how to get those thoughts assembled into a song? Perhaps you’ve stumbled upon a chord progression that you like. Here are some quick and easy steps to turn that chord progression into a song:

Become intimately acquainted with your chord progression. Play it over and over. Try holding the chords for different lengths, and as you work, you’ll notice that melodic ideas will start to materialize in your brain.

Hum the melodic ideas as they occur to you. You’ll notice that many of the ideas just won’t work, but occasionally one or two will catch your attention. If you don’t write music, sing them over and over to ensure they stay with you, and if possible record them.

Try to amplify your chord progression and melodic ideas. You need to give shape to these musical fragments. Perhaps your song will have a verse and chorus. If so, keep this guideline in mind: Generally, a verse melody is pitched a little lower than a chorus melody. And a chorus will use the tonic (key) chord more than a verse will.

Develop a lyric. For many, those first song ideas come with a topic already in mind, but if you don’t have a topic, you’ll need to choose. You need to write a song that touches the heart of the listener, so songs that connect emotionally will work the best: love, friendship, your child… those sorts of things. Remember that however you craft your lyric, the words should flow naturally. Good lyrics do not have to be good poetry. Simplicity wins out over complexity every time.

Develop a form for your song. There are many possibilities, but one of the most common forms is: Intro – Verse 1 – Chorus – Verse 2 – Chorus – Bridge – Final Chorus

A bridge occurs after the second chorus, and is a way for the songwriter to intensify the emotion of the song. Think of it as a third melody (after the verse and the chorus). A bridge melody is often pitched even higher than the chorus melody, and uses a different chord progression.

At this point, you should see your song really coming together. There is so much more you can be doing, though, to become the songwriter you’ve always wanted to be.

If you’d like to learn more about songwriting, you’re ready for Gary Ewer’s songwriting e-books. They’ll show you every stage of songwriting, in clear, easy-to-understand language.

One would think that singing in a group is simpler than singing solo, simply because it would be easier to blend in. And probably certain small errors you make may be covered up by other singers. However, if this is what you think, you are mistaken. Singing harmony, which by definition implies singing in a group, requires much more effort than a solo performance. This is because the entire singing process depends on every singer in the group, and not just a few singers. This means, you require more effort while trying to blend in with the rest of the singers, to understand the different notes that make up a melody, and to ultimately sing in harmony. Putting in some time and effort into the process, will tell you how to sing harmony in a manner that is easy to master.

How to Sing Harmony the Natural Way

When you wish to learn how to sing harmony the natural way, there are certain singing tips and tricks you can apply. Do remember, that harmony singing is always a group effort, but it does require some individual effort on your part. Also, remember to be patient while trying to learn. Here, we bring to you some tips that will help you master this beautiful art.

Tip #1
Pick out a song of your choice, along with which you can practice singing harmony. Master all parts of the song, not just a part that you would prefer to sing. Ensure that you can sing the melody on pitch. This technique needs to be first mastered, before you attempt to sing harmony perfectly. You may try out some singing exercises for this purpose.

Tip #2
One of the best ways to learn how to sing harmony is to sing while playing on a musical instrument, such as a piano. This will help you hear the notes that you are singing. While practicing with any of the various musical instruments, sing on the same scale as the melody you are playing.

Tip #3
To learn how to sing harmony by ear, you will have to train your ear to identify dissonance and resonance within the piece of music. Avoid dissonant sounds, if you are not a very experienced singer. Follow this simple exercise to train your ear to learn harmony singing. You will require a recording device for this one. Start the device, and sit at a piano. Press just any note on the piano. Hold on to it, and try to sing a note that is in harmony with the note that you have played on the piano. You will not master it at the first attempt. Continue this exercise with different notes, for at least fifteen minutes. Then, rewind this entire recorded piece, and play it. You will understand the effect of the note you picked to sing in harmony with, the pitch you were singing in, and the types of moods that you have created while attempting different notes and harmonies. Do this exercise regularly, and your ear will be trained to recognize the nuances of singing harmony.

Tip #4
Lately, a lot of CDs are available, that give you instructions on how to sing harmony by ear. You can invest in one of these, and try learning. Lots of people have found these CDs very helpful in their attempt to learn to sing harmony.

Tip #5
As mentioned earlier, singing harmony is a group effort. This means that when you are learning how to sing harmony, you must not only practice your own part, but the parts of the other singers in the group. This will help you pick up your notes in a simpler manner.

Tip #6
Singing in a group will also ensure that you are on the same scale as the rest of the singers. This means, you will not overshadow other singers, neither will you stand out in the entire singing effort. Keep in mind that, melody is of prime importance, and should be heard over and above all other notes. Try to gather in a circular fashion when you practice in a group, so that you are able to hear other singers as well.

Tip #7
Lastly, you could sign up for some singing lessons with a music teacher, who would help you understand the basics of the process of singing harmony. Singing lessons will also help you train your ear to identify the different notes required to sing harmony.

Learning how to sing harmony is an art that you cannot master overnight. It is definitely going to require a lot of time, effort, patience and self-motivation, on your part, to be able to sing harmony well. If you wish, you can try practicing with your local church choir so that you have a group with which you can learn the nitty-gritties of this wonderful method of singing.

Do you have a desire to sing well? I’m not talking about being a shy, bathroom singer where no one can even hear you. The focus is on being able to sing well, so well in fact that you even build your confidence and perform in front of your friends, family and even strangers. Don’t we all, at one point or another, wish we could have the right resources on how to learn to sing? After we’re out of school, we get a general notion stuck in our minds that the chances to learn how to learn to sing well are over. Wrong… there are tons of resources, such as this article, where you can easily understand the basics of singing techniques. So, what are we waiting for? Let’s cut to the chance and get right down to the “ins and outs” of how to learn to sing better.

How to Learn to Sing Harmony?

Let’s get a concept in the open. Your voice is the most important part of singing and your entire body. The movements of the muscles affects the way you sing and help you to learn how to sing better. Hence, the body posture, relaxed neck and shoulders and supporting muscles all come together in harmony.

Now, singing along any song is pretty easy, but singing harmony where 2 or more people sing various notes together can be difficult. Blending of different voices is what singing harmony is all about. For those who wish to know how to sing harmony, keep one thing in mind, it will take a lot of work, dedication and regular practice. Put all these elements together and see the rewarding outcome, your dream of singing like professional singers. To get started, you should be able to carry a tune and sing the melody on key. To understand the best way to learn to sing harmony, review these fundamentals.

Make sure you can sing on key. Ask a friend or family member to hear you sing the same note as it’s playing on the radio or television.
Are you matching the note perfectly? Once you have that issue out of the way, you can continue with learning how to learn to sing harmony.
Get a music sheet with harmony written in it, assuming that you know how to read music notes. The notes for harmony should be learned as their own song. So go on and play the notes as you sing with it.
Ask the same friend or family member to sing the melody as you sing harmony. You can also ask someone to play music over the piano or guitar.
Avoid singing along the radio or television as it would be difficult to really evaluate your notes. You want to be able to listen to yourself and spot the mistakes.
For the tougher sections of harmony, you can definitely stop and restart and go over it again and again, as many times as you want. The main thing is that you should only move forward once you feel comfortable.
Last, but certainly not the least and most importantly, keep practicing. Try singing without anyone’s accompaniment.

How to Learn to Sing and Play Guitar at the Same Time?

I’ve always thought that in order to know how to learn to sing and play guitar at the same time is like rubbing your stomach while you’re lightly patting your head. In order to teach yourself to sing, you need to focus on developing the right kind of coordination between the two (singing and playing guitar). Initially, it could be difficult and frustrating, however, with these tips on how to sing and practice, it will be a piece of cake (not literally).

Again, we will assume you know how to play a guitar. If not, you can join guitar lessons and improve your chances of becoming an even better singer. The following tips on “online” singing lessons to knowing how to learn to sing and play guitar at the same time will hopefully improve your singing and playing coordination.

Begin with a simple rhythm/song. Best way to go about it is by picking a rhythm with 1 strum per beat as you sing. Plus, tapping your foot on the floor will also help. Get perfect in consistent rhythms and then slowly add variations.
Next you will need to alternate between strumming and singing. In order to begin the combination of chords and vocals, playing a chord once and then singing the lyrics which occurs during the chord will develop your timing and coordination. Keep alternating between the two and once you perfect that, add more strums so that your singing can overlap it.
Don’t try to memorize the song or rhythm and what goes after what. You need to free your brain cells, so that you can concentrate on your singing easily. The flow between singing and playing should be automatic.
Now bring in other songs and play along the CDs or mp3 songs. This way you will learn the intervals, breaks and pickups of your playing.
Sing gibberish or just hum if you want while playing with the chords. Although they won’t make a huge impact, but are definitely considered as small steps towards the final goal.
As our last step to the singing lessons, track your progress. One way is by recording your sessions. Listen to yourself and try to identify where you are slacking or need improvement. This way you can track the progress and sketch out the time frame of how much more time will it be.

For you to know how to learn to sing, always keep one thing in mind, have fun. If you look at it as some boring work, you’re sure heading towards a train wreck. So turn that train around and express yourself freely, find joy in your hard work and commitment towards singing.
