Is It Bad To Get vocal Lessons Under The Age 18?

I already asked this but not a lot of people answered. So is it bad to get them under the age 18? Why? I really would like to get them and I’m in Middle School. :]
thanks.

To a certain extent depending on WHO is teaching you yes.

Singers under the age of 18 have fragile instruments. The voice sometimes doesn't fully mature until the 40's, but underage particularly is a process which can have touchy developments most PROFESSIONAL voice teachers don't want to intrude on. A voice teacher can't possibly tell how your voice or where it will grow to be that early, and too much intense training can lead to a train wreck vocally for the student once they grow into an adult. That's why you will see voice teachers who WILL NOT touch a student until they are 18.

Now, a voice teacher can teach basic technique to a younger singer, which is great. Beyond that, developing a specific sound shouldn't be tampered with until the instrument and body develops enough to make this solid.

There are greedy unqualified teachers out there who will take your money and take your instrument to the pits of hell with it. Beware of them, because it is hard to undo vocal damage.

If you truly want this, make sure the teacher is only taking you through LIGHT training. If you feel it is too vigorous, and if your body can't catch up to what the teacher is asking…GET OUT.

In the meantime, singing in school choir is a great way to get started training. Start there and see how teachers come along after finding out how they train singers your age.

Truly, if you came to my studio at 12, I am not sure if I would be eager to take you. I would work on diction and breathing. Beyond that, not sure what else I would do with you. Those elements are great, but I WILL NOT take part of destroying your instrument. I think you love your instrument and I wouldn't want to be a variable in ruining it.
