I have never been in chorus and I don’t have an exceptional voice or anything that I know of. But I do have an ear for music. I’ve been playing guitar for 3 years or so and have a pretty well developed ability to distinguish pitches. However when I try to sing or hum the notes, I have relatively little vocal control. Can this be fixed?
Absolutely!
I’m a very strong advocate of vocal lessons and it is my belief that anyone can learn to sing. I /hated/ my voice before I started taking vocal lessons. I was ready to never sing again by the end of 8th grade. But now I’m finishing up my junior year as the only soprano one in my school choir, an opera enthusiast, and ready to audition to go to college for music. I have been performing more than I had ever imagined I would. If I was able to learn to sing, you definitely can.
Control can absolutely be learned. It takes time and hard work, but so does everything else worth learning. The first step to take is to find a good vocal teacher and learn the basics of vocal technique. If you can grasp the technique quickly, I’ll be willing to bet your control will improve drastically after only a few lessons.
