i joined a musical theatre group a couple of years ago and you have to audition to get in each year, and i get in. i have done a lot of musical but to take musical theatre further or as a carer you have to be able to sing well. but i cant, im not very good. what should i do?
The obvious answer is to get singing lessons. However, if you don’t want to do that, there are some more minor things you can do… first, start doing some breathing exercises, scales and pitch exercises EVERY TIME YOU SING. You’ll find loads of examples on the net (especially you-tube). You also need to decide what part of your voice you want to develop eg do you have the potential to be a belter, a soprano, are you better at the old-style more classical musicals or modern musicals that require a sort of pop-edge to the voice. Exercises will help you find your range etc.
Every time you sing a new song say it as a monologue first making sure that you know the whole history behind the song… emotion is crucial in musical theatre, you can have the best voice in the world but at the end of the day you have to convey a story and no one else is going to believe what you have to say if you don’t believe it yourself.
Finally, record yourself singing. No one has to hear it if you don’t want but it’s easier to be critical about yourself if you hear it back on tape. By critical i don’t mean insulting but you can identify any problems in your voice (eg it cracks when you sing certain intervals, it’s stuck in your nose etc.) Once you know you have a specific problem it’s easier to get help on it.
Good luck!
