I am a country singer. Not necessarily back porch bluegrass country but more Texas and red dirt. I just want to know what exactly what voice lessons help you with?
All I'm really looking for is helping my voice sound much clearer and increasing my range some. Although I am an amateur I never get a bad comment on my voice, then again, I still cannot project it like i need to. Any help?
Studying with a good teacher will simply help you make the most of your voice: it will almost certainly stretch your vocal range, clarify the sound, give you more control in singing loudly and softly, make the sound project better, and generally give you a wider range of vocal 'colors that you can use to sing how you want. Essentially voice lessons are about finding YOUR sound and freeing your voice up so you can do more stuff with it.
A side-effect will be that you also feel more confident about your singing.
But a quick warning: it will depend on who you get lessons with. Make sure you find the right teacher for you, because a bad teacher can make you lose confidence, sing badly, and ruin your enjoyment. As a rule of thumb, consider after your first lesson whether you feel an improvement, whether you enjoyed yourself, and whether your teacher help improve your understanding of singing and how your voice works. Some changes to the way you sing will take time, and you need to place trust in a teacher in order to benefit from lessons, but nevertheless don't let someone wreck your voice. There are a lot of quacks out there.
All the best!
