I used to enjoy drama as a child but frequently suffered sore throats/chest infections (several times a year). I noticed by age 14 my voice felt weak and out of tune and I lost the confidence to sing. Years later I still do not like my own voice and am unable to sing but Iove music.
I am starting to research online into training my voice. Any advice for someone in my position? I’m not kidding myself I could become a great singer, but I’d like to be able to hold a tune and so not be so embarassed of my singing voice.
Is this doable? What is the best advice you can give?
(I do still suffer throat infections 2-3 times a year – should i take this into account?)
Your vocal chords need exercise just your arms, legs, abs etc. I sing and have been in the performing arts since highschool, and have taken around 5 years of voice lessons. What I have found is if you practice with a tuned instrument it will help you stay on key, and your tone will get better with practice. I also get major throat infections, maybe 1-2 times a year in fact over this winter my throat was bleeding heavily due to an infection. When your throat gets sick try to keep talking and singing to a minimum to prevent damage to your voice, after you get better, depending on how long you were sick you can be back to where you were in a few days to a few weeks. Don’t give up and remember practice makes perfect
