Tips, Tricks and Tools To Help You Sing!

How to learn to sing without a teacher?

Ok, so im 17 and when i sing i am really, really out of tune i was wondering if anyone had any pointers or any tips on learning to sing without a teacher as i just cant afford it and i don’t really have the free time.

thanks in advance

record yourself singing. that’s the fairest way for you to criticize your singing. don’t just recognize that you’re out of tune, but try to recognize HOW you’re out of tune (if you’re sharp (too high) or flat (too low). when you sing, you have to really listen to what you’re doing. that may sound stupid, but for the majority of people when they sing or play an instrument they get so caught up in what they’re doing that they don’t actually listen! there’s no quick fix to it, this is the same with all musical things. you have to be patient and discipline yourself and the approach you take. if you have a keyboard or piano you could learn a scale, then go through each note and match the pitch of your voice exactly to the note the piano is playing. recording this and playing it back to yourself would also help. then you could try playing the scale on the piano by itself, then singing it to see how accurate you get it. if you’re unsure how you’re out of tune, you could ask a friend who can detect tuning well. exercises like scales are the key in developing yourself musically. they’re unenjoyable, but that’s the price you have to pay!
when you have your tuning sorted, there’s an excellent programme called "Singing Success" that may interest you. it’s about $200 to buy and i think it’s $100 to download.

if you’re not musically educated you’ll have to get someone who is to help you. otherwise you’ll find yourself incredibly frustrated and confused as to why you don’t know how to improve. if you’ve more questions, my email is siobhanmccafferty@rocketmail.com
