Tips, Tricks and Tools To Help You Sing!

How to add character and spunk into a pure voice (singing)?

I naturally have a high talking voice and a mezzo soprano singing voice. It is not raspy at all, it has been described as very "pure" and "clear". Its cool and light but gets warmer with lower notes. It sounds nice but lacks character and spunk. Pretty but boring. Its good for R&B but I want to do alternative sounds like "Gravity"or "My hometown".

How can I learn to add character, roughness, and other little quarks.

Analyzie what the song is really saying, the emotions involved in it. Is it a little angry, sad, desperate, crazy/wacked out, in love etc. Then try to feel these things while singing. You can’t manually add these quirks as you call them, (also known as "color") Color needs to come naturally from feeling the emotions. record yourself, so you can see where you did or didn’t have color.
