well i play guitar and go to bonfires and boat parties all the time well i can play just about anything but i can’t sing at all. usually i play and somebody else sings. But i would like to learn how but i keep singing in the shower, on the way to work and school, when i play, along with the radio. And i notice very small improvement and i think i need some further coaching.
but any tips from you guys that are vocally gifted?
practice practice practice lol
here are some things i try to remember
you have to sing from your diaphragm- a lot of people sing from their throat which can really ruin your voice.
air flow is hugely important too. make sure whether your singing low or high, loud or soft, your flow of air does that fluctuate
make sure your mouth is open wide when you sing too. by this i don’t mean show everyone your tonsils, i just mean that the entire inside of your mouth should be free for sound and air to come out of.
one thing i was taught about breathing- when you breath in, make sure it is your stomach/lungs that get bigger, not your chest. this will help you to sing from down below which will give you a better quality sound as well as making higher notes easier.
on the subject of higher notes, hitting them is highly psychological. never go into a song thinking about your limits, do not visualize a high note being above your head, instead see it right in front of you. it is also about relaxing. when singing you want to be as relaxed as possible- youtube Kansas Carry on My Wayward Son (live), you will see that the lead singer doesn’t even look like he is trying. if you are not relaxed you might strain yourself, giving yourself a poor voice quality and you could also seriously hurt your voice.
also find your own style, your own style so to speak. i can try to sing opera all i want but i will not sound like an opera singer, personally i have more of a broadway voice (i wish i was as good as him lol) . when you find your "voice" stick with it and use it, don’t try to make it do other things.
