I need to learn to sing.
Start with the breath. It is the first thing that has immediate impact. Breathe from your stomach using your mouth and nose, not from your throat. Your stomach should go out as you inhale and in as you exhale, your shoulders shouldn’t move at all. Practice DAILY. Once you get that, work on creating space in your mouth. The more space you have the better the notes will ring out, especially the higher notes. To do this, lift the roof of your mouth raising your soft palate, relaxing your tongue and dropping your jaw. Make sure everything is relaxed and there is no tension in your throat. Whatever you do, do not strain. If anything feels uncomfortable, stop right away. If you can afford a private teacher, get one because they will correct incorrect techniques and bad habits. Have proper posture when singing. If sitting, you should be sitting up straight with your feet flat on the ground. If standing, your feet should be shoulder width apart, one slightly in front of the other, knees slightly bent, sternum and chest lifted, shoulders down and back and your head raised. After that work on placement. Most of the time, you want to sing with a forward tone. Sing into the mask of your face and not into the back of your throat. Work on mouth placement and tall vowels. Keep everything tall and avoid the sound getting spread. Put the your hands on both of your cheeks like you’re about to punch yourself and open your mouth. This should keep your mouth tall until you get used to it. You could always join the chorus class your school or college offers. That will help with learning how to sing. You can learn how to hear harmonies and blend with others and it’s free most of the time. That’s how I learned and now I am going to school to be a chorus teacher and teach people how to sing =)
