Great question! Every year, I would make sure that ALL my voice students, even the beginners, would learn to do this a cappella. It has a very large range , which makes it difficult – but we would work on it. We would have kids sing on morning announcements, at home games, etc. We would work up pairs, to lead the Pledge, and sing the anthem. We would make ourselves available to veteran's groups, etc, – they LOVE it when young students show up, all neatly dressed and respectful and do this – everybody wins.
I would teach my kids how to find their KEY to song this – it is terrifying when you find you are going to *crack* that top note. we would start with Oh – oh SAY – the note on SAY should be the lowest note you can sing well. We would sing a scale and half to find the top note – DRMFSLTDRMFS – that top sol is *glare*. I would tell them NEVER to junk this up – if they were asked to carry a flag, would they take it home and putt Bedazzlers and junk on it? NO! Bring it strong and clean, or don't bring it at all.
Well, everybody got chances to sing – in school at games, and then calls for OUT of school. Kids would come in and say that that over the weekend they sang at their Dad's rod and gun club opening day, brother's Little League, a NASCAR trial – things their family was into. Once people start to hear you, then more people ASK to hear you. Nothing is too small to say yes to – you never know where it will lead. I built my reputation when I mover her by playing gigs that other people refused – bad time, inconvenient location ,short money. After a while, I got to be the A-list call.
So – be prepared, polite, well-groomed, on time, say thank you for asking me, leave a card with your name and number – and eventually, the phone will ring again. And again. And again.
Now – branch out into CHURCH solo work, too. Everybody thinks that the easy way to get heard is in pop music. Nope – too many out there. Find yourself a SPOT – and fill it well. One of ours students who did this, then did it in the Navy, and toured with their top choral group. Now he is a famous newscaster – seriously! It's all in preparation and confidence in yourself. I wish you much luck!
