Well, i’m 14 and am passionate about acting, the only problem is, everytime i want to go for an audition it asks you to sing. Trust me though, i really can’t hit a note. I go swimming 20 hours a week, so my mam can’t afford to send me to singing lessons aswell, any tips on voice exercises or a free way to learn to sing? Thanks in advance

I have been taking vocal lessons for about 14 years now, since i was four! One great tip that helps many singers is to record your voice. Because untrained ears often can’t tell if they are hitting the right notes until they can hear it played back to them. This will help you realize which parts of the song need more work.
Another tip is to sing with a smile on your face, or while raising your eyebrows. This will lift up your palette (the roof of your mouth) and improve the clarity and sound of your voice.
Remember that when your singing the power should be coming from your lower belly, not your chest or your throat. When you need to hit a high note tighten up your lower abdominal muscles, this will give you the power to hit the note. This also works with extremely low notes.
A common mistake made by singers is that they open their mouths to wide when singing. Never open your mouth wider than you would when you are speaking. If you keep your mouth not to open when singing you will be able to sing for longer without losing your breath. When you are hitting a high note, you can open your mouth a little wider, but just a little. Pretend like your holding a pencil between your teeth.
Always, always, ALWAYS warm up your voice before singing extensively(for a half hour or more). You can do this by singing scales. Also do warm ups that involve pronunciation. Try singing this: “The tip of the tongue and the teeth and the lips.” over and over, each time faster. Also check on youtube for some other warm ups.
On the day of your audition avoid milk/cheese products. They cause mucus buildup in your throat and cause your voice to catch and crack. Please, please PLEASE no alcohol or cigarettes within 48 hours of an audition… or ever!
If possible, 15 or 20 minutes before your performance, slowly drink some hot lemon water. It will open up your sinuses and relax the muscles in your throat.
Before you preform whether it be at an audition or recital or anywhere, do not think about your nerves. Say to yourself that you have worked hard and your going to sing the hell out of this song. But most of all you’re going to enjoy being up there, take it all in and show that you’re having fun!
Remember to sing ALL THE TIME. In the shower, while doing your homework, while your going to bed, cleaning the house.. I mean all the time! If you take any advice, take this. It will get you used to your voice, and you will start singing all the time without even noticing. If you can’t full on sing, hum a tune. You will be surprised how much this little habit will improve our voice.
And my last tip: Have confidence! If all else fails, your confidence will shine through and impress the hell out of whoever is watching. This is what will make you memorable. Your stage presence is 50% of the battle. Master this and your halfway there!
I hope this helps! Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with!
