How Can We Reduce Muscle Tension? – How To Get Rid Of Vocal Strain / Vocal Tension – Can We Reduce Our Vocal Tension?

Vocal strain vocal tension is the most frustrating, agitating, and sometimes even painful aspect of singing… It destroys tone quality, restricts range, and turns singing into a chore instead of a fun activity.

The big question is, “can we reduce our vocal tension”?

Of course we can!

What Causes Vocal Strain / Vocal Tension?

In most cases, vocal tension is caused by bad singing technique. Once we learn how to sing with good technique, all of these vocal tension problems will disappear. Every note in our singing range should be accesses easily and freely, with no tension at all.

When you are singing correctly, it’s almost like pressing keys on a piano… Each note can be pressed with the same ease… There is no pushing, pulling, or straining.
The cause of most vocal tension comes from engaging the muscles that we use to swallow. They are the muscles located outside of the larynx (the larynx is the grouping of muscle and cartilage that houses the vocal chords).

These outer muscles are called into action when the vocal chords are not receiving the correct amount of air pressure. With too much or too little air being sent to the vocal chords, the chords will not be able to hold together. The outer muscles then will attempt to tighten the chords, forcing the larynx up or down. This is where most vocal tension comes from.

The unfortunate thing is, these outer muscles are extremely inefficient at controlling the vocal chords. While in some cases, they may be able to adjust the chords to vibrate at the right frequency, you will never produce your richest tone using these extra muscles to control your voice.

Get Rid Of Vocal Strain / Vocal Tension… And You Will Double Your Vocal Range

The biggest problem with vocal strain / vocal tension is it limits a singers range dramatically. Great vocal range is developed by training your vocal chords to shorten as you travel higher into your range. This ‘zipping up’ action is commonly referred to as ‘bridging’.

By using the outer muscles of the larynx to adjust the vocal chords, your voice will get more and more tense as you travel higher into your range. By the time your chords need to zip up, your voice is so tense, the chords can not hold together any longer.

Instead of zipping up (which is highly desired), they break apart and form a muscle coordination called falsetto. This is a lighter production which doesn’t have the depth and power of singing on a zipped up chord coordination.

The other alternative is worse… you use the outer muscles to push the larynx upwards to try and reach for high notes. It’s almost like shouting! Please try to avoid singing like this. It can actually damage your voice… permanently.

It sounds terrible, and does not feel comfortable at all.

How To Get Rid Of Vocal Strain / Vocal Tension

How can we reduce muscle tension? The first step to reducing muscle tension is quite simple and obvious, although many people overlook this simple practice. Warm up the voice before singing. This is a MUST if you want to sing at your best, and purest tone.

Singing in a way, is just like playing sports. We use certain muscles to get the desired results. Just like running, singing requires the appropriate muscles to be warmed up. It’s gets the blood flowing, and the muscles functioning more efficiently.

Singing without warming up will limit the ability to hit and sustain high notes, while causing a tremendous amount of vocal strain.

A fifteen minute warm-up on easy scales, in an easy range, should be effective in warming up your voice and reducing vocal tension.

The biggest (and most common) cause of vocal strain is singing with bad vocal technique. A few years ago, I was a classic example… My technique was so bad that I actually began to develop vocal nodules. My voice would feel sore after ever session. I would actually feel my larynx spasm during, and even DAYS after a practice.

It happened because I didn’t know how to shorten my vocal chords in the higher regions of my range. I used to feel intense strain in my throat, and my jaw. The answer to correcting this, is training these outer muscles to relax while singing. The inner muscles of your larynx (the correct singing muscles) can then handle all the vocal chord adjustments, producing the tone much easier. As these muscles are developed, your voice will develop incredible range, and great tone, with no vocal tension at all.

So…

To eliminate vocal strain we must:

1. Warm up our voices before singing

2. Develop a technique that allows the outer muscles of the larynx to relax, while the inner (correct) muscles perform the vocal chord adjustments. This is done using exercises that allow our voice to relax and develop our correct singing muscles. The very best program that teaches this technique in detail is Roger Burnley’s Singing Made Simple.

Complete Singorama Singing Course for Learning – Learn How to Sing with Singorama Downloadable Software Program

If you love to sing, but never manage to perform like a pro, you can consider using Singorama. It is a professionally designed learning course that is supposed to make you sing like a professional. Can you really get the desired results? Find out more about the features, benefits and drawbacks of the program so that you can answer this question for yourself.

Singorama is a course based on a downloadable software program. You will learn how to sing using primarily audio and written instructions. The program consists of 28 lessons each one focusing on a different aspect of singing. There are a number of bonuses included in the package. These are special audios that allow you to warm up and to exercise your vocal styling.

It will not be a mistake to say that the program is quite coherent. It takes you from the very first steps of singing, voice understanding, breathing and posture, tone, styling and tune, to more complex tasks such as extending your vocal range. There are also practical lessons which will teach you how to use your singing knowledge (and talent) in different settings and mainly how to sing with a band.

How about the teaching? It is interesting to find out how the learning process goes with the Singorama course. As said earlier, you will receive both audio and written instructions. The Singorama lessons are packed with practical applications of the different techniques that you can listen to and repeat. There are also plenty of exercises especially designed to train your voice and to allow you to use the different singing techniques effectively. You will also use music recordings to practice syncing your vocal performance with the music.

In general, the teaching methods used in Singorama are traditional. You will learn the same things and do the same exercises if you sign up for a traditional singing course with a vocal teacher. The only difference is that you will not get much individual guidance when using the e-course. Even though Singorama is very thorough and has effective teaching methods, you cannot possibly get a feedback and correct any mistakes that you may be making.

The designers of the program have thought about this as well and have provided a solution. The course package includes an ear-training software program. It shows you how to develop “an ear for music”. Basically, Singorama will teach you different techniques that will allow you to assess your vocal styling and tune. This is a good aid to have in general. Still, you may still miss the guidance of a professional vocal teacher.

One of the advantages of the Singorama program is that it takes you one step further than teaching you how to use your voice to sing. There are practical lessons on stage performance, on dealing with stage fright and anxiety and on starting a successful career in music. In this respect, Singorama can help you become a professional, but it should be pointed out that in order to become a music star, you will need a lot of talent, persistence, creativity and even a business drive. These are things that a singing course cannot give you no matter how comprehensive it is.

Will you be able to become a professional singer with Singorama? On one hand, the course is comprehensive and very professional. It uses teaching methods that have been tested and proven to work. Additionally, Singorama gives you some valuable practical lessons on making a break through in the music business. Another advantage is that you can get training at your own pace in the comfort of your home. Despite all these benefits, there is no guarantee that you will become a star. Still, you may as well try.

Career In Singing

You have taken singing lessons and your friends tell you that you are a great singer. You know deep down inside you that you are a singing talent yet to be discovered.

Now that you are well and ready, having developed your own unique singing style, you want to launch career as a professional singer. You realistically realized that without any previous professional singing experience will be difficult for your singing career to take off.

Singing agents, recording labels, club owners and employer of singers will naturally be cautious before they hire you because they have never heard of you before and what if you fumble on your first professional performance? That will be an embarrassment for them and may even cost them money.

Instead of being a singing talent, they are afraid that you will become a singing terror! Even if they recognize your singing talent and employ you, your professional singer’s fee will be low because you are an unknown.

So how do you make a name for yourself as a singing talent so that you can launch your singing career successfully? One easy way is to take part in as many singing contests as you can.

Not only to take part, but to win many of them. By winning singing contests and competitions, you will win fans and singing talent scouts and employers will start noticing you. By virtue of these people approaching you for singing contracts to sign you up instead of the other way around, you are now a being recognized singer with great talent and can ask for higher professional fees because they will be competing with each other for your singing performances.

Naturally you have to be a great performer and good singer to win singing contests, so you must know your own strength and weaknesses. You must be able to convince the judges that you are worthy to win the singing competition. How do you do that? Just must be very well prepared.

I am sure you must have watched the TV singing competition show “American Idol”. You must be laughing and rolling on the floor when you see American idol wannabes making a fool of themselves in the preliminary rounds. There were those who were tone deaf, those who have forgotten the song lyrics, those who were just disastrous singers and a pain to listen to and those who are so outrageous in their performance that they over perform ridiculously.

Now, you will notice that the contestants that make it through to the later rounds do not share the characteristics and antics mentioned above. Those who made it to the finals are class acts in themselves. Why? This is because they know where they are, understand their singing skills they have at their disposition and use them to their maximum potential and of course, they take singing lessons from the singing coaches.

In short, they were well prepared for the singing contest. So you should learn from the mistakes of those contestants that did not make it and learn the good habits from those that made it to the finals.

Armed with these skills, then go and join any singing contests you can find and yes, when you are ready, only when you are ready, then join the American Idol singing contest. Who knows, you may be the next American idol and achieve worldwide singing super star status. Wouldn’t that be a fantastic way to launch your singing career?

Learn To Play Music

Nowadays within the world there are a lot of different methods to understand how to play music. Several individuals are still using the conventional way of learning to play music, by taking lessons from a music instructor that is talented in whichever field of music, or whichever musical instrument they like better. Other individuals strive to understand how to play music with no help. This can be overwhelming and this structure doesn’t have a very high success rate. This more often than not only works fo r the extremely committed musicians, or the people that clearly have a knack for music. Even after that it takes a lot longer to learn this way because you have to find out everything on your own.

Online Music Lessons

The hottest way to understand how to play music is by Online Programs. A number of of these programs have been produced by some of the most gifted and most accomplished musicians in the world. These lessons offer videos and tutorials that teach you the right way to accomplish things. These online music lessons can be especially valuable, and above all, very convenient. Through these online lessons you can take lessons on your own time. No more setting up lessons or packing up all of your gear and taking it to the music store for a half hour lesson, just to pack it up and carry it back homewhen the lesson is over. With conventional lessons you truly do not get as much out of them because a music instructor has their own life and additional students to deal with. A lot of times you are only a tactic to make money to him.

Online lessons are not only for people that are just beginning. There are also online music lessons for the intermediate player that is wanting to advance their skills. Masters of each musical instrument have made videos and tutorials that teach a decent player to become a master at the instrument they prefer to play. These lessons are exceptionally helpful for guitar players wanting to take the next step. They illustrate more difficult scales for you to master and new techniques that will make you play quicker and help you master the frets.

If you are thinking about learning to play an instrument, or if you already understand how to play and truly just intend to get better, then you shoud certainly check out Online Music Lessons before signing up at the community music store. This will save you time and the main factor about these online lessons is that they will save you a large amount of money. No more fees for each lesson to learn how to play music.

Are You Really Want to Sing in High Notes?

Do you love to sing, but find yourself constantly having trouble singing high notes? Well, there is an easy way to improve your vocal range. All you need to do is learn the best singing techniques by doing vocal exercises. If you do the proper vocal exercises, you can improve your vocal range quickly and easily.

The first step is for you to understand why you have trouble singing high notes. There are two primary reasons for that.

The most common reason that people have trouble singing high notes is that they are singing in a falsetto voice. Falsetto means that you have reached a point in your vocal range where your vocal chords have trouble holding themselves together. When they start to separate, you will find that your tone has no depth. That is known as a falsetto voice. Sometimes a falsetto voice can be useful, but it is definitely good to be able to sing in a higher voice with more depth to it, most of the time.
Another possible reason that you may have trouble singing high notes is that you are trying to force your voice to sing outside your comfortable vocal range. Generally, that means that you wind up yelling the high notes. Not only can that be hard on the ears of those around you, but it can also potentially do permanent damage to your vocal chords. Once you understand why you have trouble singing high notes, you can begin correcting the problems. One of the best ways to do that is to do speech level singing exercises. They can help you to improve your vocal range by developing your mixed voice.

By “zipping up” your vocal chords and dividing the resonance between your mouth and head, you can achieve a mixed voice. Your mixed voice is a vocal range where you can sing rich high notes easily. If you sing in your mixed voice, rather than falsetto or yelling, you will greatly improve the sound of your voice.

If you do speech level vocal exercises, you can easily improve your mixed voice. Speech level vocal exercises are specifically designed to help you to exercise a specific muscle group, which is by your vocal chords. These inner larynx muscles, once strengthened and properly used, can give you a larger vocal range, a stronger, fuller voice and the ability to easily hit high notes.

So, if you want to start singing high notes easily, just practice some speech level vocal exercises. That way, you can improve your vocal range and avoid having to yell the high notes. Don’t cause permanent vocal chord damage, when you can learn simple vocal exercises and sing better in no time, instead!

The Do and Don’t of Scream Singing

Scream singing may seem like noise to some, but it is really a very complicated process. If you are into death metal singing, you need to learn to scream properly.

The first key to scream singing properly is to be patient. It can’t be done overnight. It can take months o r even years to perfect. Don’t become impatient and scream more than you are capable of. You could seriously damage your vocal chords doing that. Also, when you do scream singing, don’t use all of your air up at once. It will hurt. Remember that everything is good, in moderation.

You should also learn about head resonance, before you learn to scream. Melissa Cross uses a good method for that. She recommends that you put a pencil in your mouth and then sing both over and under it. That should give you a good example of head resonance.

You should also learn to scream nasally, when you are scream singing. That basically means that you should picture the sound coming out your nose. This is a healthier and easier option than singing from deep in your throat. You can also add small “yeh” sounds to vowels that are within words, as you learn to scream properly. That can help you to achieve a comfortable scream sound.
If you are skilled at death metal singing, it can also be a big help. Death metal singing is a good precursor to learning to scream sing properly.

Also, remember that a good singing warm up goes a long way. Treat scream singing as an athletic event. All athletes both warm up and cool down, if they are smart. You should do the same, by practicing some basic vocal exercises, such as scales, before you perform.

Vocal strain is no laughing matter, so if anything hurts, when you are scream singing, stop! Rest for a while. In fact, if your voice feels strained you should not talk at all for a while. However, if you must talk, don’t make the mistake of whispering, as many people do. All that does is block off your vocal chords and cause more damage. Use your normal speaking voice if you absolutely need to.

Learn to scream best by staying well hydrated. Drink plenty of water. Also, before a performance, you can drink cola, since it coats your throat and causes better reverberation. If you really don’t want plain water, you can try some diluted squash juice for more flavors. However, water is really a better option. Staying well hydrated can improve your scream singing voice, as well as your general health.

In Melissa Cross’s DVD, The Zen of Screaming, she explains that supporting your diaphragm is also important, during scream singing. You need balanced air pressure. Otherwise, your performance will suffer.

So follow these simple scream singing tips, if you want to learn to scream properly. Whether you do death metal singing or any other sort, proper screaming is important. You should be able to enjoy scream singing safely, after all.

It has been used by several top performers like Taylor Swift and Keith Urban. It consists of a set of 17 lessons that start every singer no matter what level they are, with the same exercises and helps them build their vocal strength throughout the whole 17 sessions. This program allows singers to improve their vocal range by at least one octave. It helps them use their voices without strain. This gives more confidence and overall better performances.

It uses the Speech Level Singing method, by Seth Rigg, which teaches singers how to sing with using less vocal energy, giving them more endurance and gives them more strength in their performances. Brett Manning has just improved on some of the weak points of the Speech Level Singing method. He took the strong points of the system and added some of his own techniques to make the whole program extremely helpful. The program alleviates the need for long, drawn out singing lessons. You can listen to the lessons over and over when you need to brush up a bit.

The lessons start out with Brett himself discussing some of the techniques and terminology to help you get started. One lesson simply builds on the previous one, so you learn in steps. The CD’s eventually start you with singing exercises that gradually help you build a strong and powerful voice. Some of the later lessons get into the specifics or your style of singing and how to use the techniques for each style. This program is one of the best programs around. For around $200 you can have the program to use repeatedly when you need to.

10 Tips To Help Improve Your Singing Voice

Want a a few tips to help improve singing? Here are Ten tips to guide you reach your potential!

1. Breathe through your diaphragm, not the lungs. control the air that you’re exhaling when you sing, and breathing from the diaphragm gives you more air to work with. In order to get this done, breathe so that your stomach expands instead of your chest when you take in air. When you practice, do your best to focus on using the same amount of air for low notes and high notes. This will help erase the break between your registers and give you a steadier tone.

2. practice-a lot. It wouldn’t be a lot different if it were a guitar, and the human voice is not even as accurate than a guitar. You need to get your sense of pitch down, and you need to train your voice to achieve a higher pitch if you want to really hit with all the notes in your range.

3. Don’t strain your voice. Practice is fine, but don’t try to reach very high notes or you might badly affect your voice box. Do it slowly and continuously and you’ll sing well in no time. Keep your practice time to an hour or so a day, then move up if you feel like it. If you ever feel like your voice os straining, or if you feel soreness or pain, stop right away.

4. Listen to criticism. Singing well takes a while, and while at it you’re going to hear people say a lot of bad things about you. If you notice a trend, recognize that people might be making a good judgment and try to work on the problem aspect of your voice. Never allow anyone to belittle you who really doesn’t have anything to say other than, “you suck,” though. They are nothing to you, and they are clueless as to what they’re talking about.
5. Record your voice when you sing. This is the only way to hear your problems, because you can separate yourself from your voice and listen to your voice as other people hear you. You would not like this initially, but keep at it; you’ll improve greatly, and you’ll start to hear stuff you like about your voice and really expand on those things.

6. Talk to established singers. Most of them will be pleasured to give you some tips and exercises that helped them out, and any time you need to ask for directions, the wise thing to do is to ask the person that’s already there.

7. eat healthy and get enough hydration. Don’t do anything that could dry out your voice and will not allow you to sing well. Caffeine is bad, as is anything that causes mucous to be sticky like dairy products (milk in particular is a very bad choice). Avoid too much cigarettes and alcohol; this can really make you sing poorly. One famous case of booze and cigarettes damaging a classic voice is Harry Nilsson, who shred his voice box while working on his “Pussycats” album with John Lennon and ended up carrying a bucket with him to spit blood into during the recording session. His fantastic voice gradually became better and sounded great, but he never could sing quite as well again; his highest register was permanently destroyed.

8. Whatever the style is, sing it. If you’re singing country, listen to country singers; if you’re singing rock, listen to rock singers. be particular with things that are the same in each style and try to copy those. Be mindful, however, to keep your voice unique, and not to simply imitate another singer’s voice. Make your own person come out in your music.

9. Explore different sounds. Particular noises, like a really nasal note, can assist you to[spin] [spin]expand your range if you practice with them. Ask singers for their tips, and take them up on it.

10. Finally, stay positive! If you’ve had a few bad scales, that doesn’t mean your voice is going to be bad all day. Take some warm tea and try again. Don’t feel blue, and don’t think that your voice is bad, otherwise it certainly will be. I know how bad that sounds, but the way you think is definitely a big part of singing, and if you don’t think you sound good, others will think the same.

Basic Audio Recording

Basic Audio Recording

Before Recording

If you have never recorded audio on a computer you may find that there are several easy ways to do so. Before attempting to record though, you will want to make sure you have a suitable microphone. These can range from a $10 computer microphone, a $1000 studio microphone, to one built in to your laptop. All these will work but the only differences will be audio quality, ranging from compression levels to audio pickup sensitivity.

Basic Recorders

The easiest and quickest way to record with any Microsoft Windows system is to use ‘Sound Recorder’ located within the start menu in Accessories. The only limitations are that recordings from Windows Sound Recorder are limited to time and one track. For more advanced recording you will probably want to use a "multitrack" software such as Mixcraft, Cubase, or Cakewalk.
Before Recording

Before using any software you will want to make sure your microphone is plugged in properly and that the correct drivers are installed if they are needed. Some hardware is "Plug and Play" meaning that it requires no driver installation. You can check on your computers audio input and output by going to Start, Control Panel, and Sound. If you find that you have no microphone input or output drivers you may need to search on the internet for your computers hardware sound device drivers. You can do this from any search engine.

Using Multitrack Recorders

If you are wanting to record audio with multiple tracks, such as, recording your voice to background music. The best way is to use multitrack software. For a simple recording of the previous example, you would add your background music to a track, "arm" another track for your voice and then record. Before recording you will want to make sure that the track you armed has the correct microphone settings.

Saving to .WAV, .WMA, or MP3 Format

To save your recording as a .wav, .wma, or .mp3 you will need to mixdown or export the audio to a media file. When selecting which type of file you want to save it as you will want to factor in file size to audio quality and format. .WAV files are particularly large files that take up a lot of harddrive space and might not be formatted to the specifications of audio (MP3 players) or websites. While most MP3 players and websites accept .WMA and .MP3 format. Also be aware of the various bitrates of your audio export.

Singing Success Vs. The Singing Zone

When you are looking at Brett Manning’s Singing Success vs. The Singing Zone, Per Bristow’s program it will be very difficult to find cons about either program. An online voice lesson program is a lot like the singing coach in person, they are unique individuals that offer a person a fabulous way of developing skills and confidence in singing or improving their professional singing voice. The differences in their techniques and methods really lie in their backgrounds and what brought them to singing and vocal coaching.

The Singing Zone

Per Bristow, of The Singing Zone is a world renowned theatrical singer. He began singing in Sweden at a very early age and sang on the stage in many productions both in Europe and the United States. He has developed a style of coaching that involves more than just standard breathing and vocal exercises. Per gives people the ability to increase their range, resonance and power while also developing stage presence and theatrical qualities of projection and range.
Per’s program is beneficial to more than just singers however, his program also has been used widely by presenters and speakers who find that the methods Per teaches regarding stage presence and projection give them the ability to hold their audience’s attention longer and keep people entertained while they are learning about a new product, plan, or other presentation.

Singing Success

Brett Manning is also a famous vocal coach who has brought his knowledge and experience to the Internet. Brett works with many famous singers and groups and has a long waiting list of people who find his style and teaching superb. Singing Success is made up of CDs, a video and a workbook that include all of the exercises that are required to extend range and power in your voice. His program is designed to make each lesson fun and give singers the most effective vocal lessons available online.

Brett is a unique coach because many of the people who use his online system find that they are drawn to the motivating and inspirational type of coaching that he does. He is able to identify gaps in a vocalist’s range quickly and individualize lessons to help the individual move to the next level of their singing ability.

Comparing the Programs

These are two outstanding programs and both Per and Brett are vocal coaches that will inspire and motivate a singer to exceed even the expectations they have set for themselves. I have used both Per and Brett’s programs and continue to do so, for different reasons. First, I find them both inspirational and I feel good after I have spent time with them. With Per I have learned how to develop the theatrical and stage quality of my voice, while with Brett I have learned how to step into different genres of music effortlessly.

If I were asked to choose Singing Success vs. The Singing Zone, I could not. I enjoy both of their styles of teaching and they both are so passionate about music and voice that I have not been disappointed by either of them. I honestly can’t think of any cons for these coaches. I would suggest that you try each instructor and get a feel for their style and presentation during lessons. The vocal coach that you choose will be very personal and you should make a decision based upon how the coach makes you feel when you are working with them online.
